Latest news and hints & tips from the world of Plastering and Rendering

House rendering is a great way to give your property's exterior a complete makeover.

We have completed many rendering and k-rend projects throughout Southport, Merseyside and further afield over recent years.

We use several different rendering finishes throughout all of our projects, but more recently we have switched to a Monocouche render. We still use a K-Rend from time to time, but Monocouche is what we’re favouring at the moment.

What is a Monocouche render? Monocouche renders, is a similar type of K-Rend, that is a type of decorative finish applied to the outside of buildings to provide both decoration and weather protection.

Derived from the French, and meaning mono or single layer, Monocouche renders are modern single coat renders which can be applied by hand or machine.

Colour pigmented throughout, meaning no part of the building is painted, monocouche renders provide a low maintenance, weather resistant, hard wearing and attractive finish to a large range of external brick and blockwork properties.

Monocouche renders are the ideal choice for a low-maintenance and durable finish. Consisting of just one coat, applied in two passes, monocouche render allows for fast application as a pumped or spray render which reduces scaffolding and site costs.

Monocouche renders use white cement and are pre-coloured (in any colour you want). They can be applied in one coat (typically around 15mm thick), so are quicker and therefore less labour intensive than traditional house rendering products.

Our range of coloured renders can be used to produce a scraped or roughcast finish, and are suitable for most projects in Southport.

Render is used across Southport and the wider North West, especially on large modern buildings, but the manufacturers of render recommend that it needs sprucing up from time to time.

Moorcroft plastering specialise in render cleaning and offer designated render cleaning services for all types of render, even if it wasn’t us who applied it in the first place.

If not cleaned regularly to the colour of render will appear to fade. This is because render is likely to become infected with algae, mosses, and lichens that stain and ruin the appearance of a home or commercial building.

Many people simply do not know an effective way to remove stains from render. Fortunately, Moorcroft plastering has a safe and eco-friendly way of removing organic matter and atmospheric pollution from exterior render.

Finished coloured renders like K-Rend, suffer from algae, bacteria and mildew staining. Weather and pollution can also lead to staining and discolouration.

At Moorcroft Plastering UK we use our low-pressure unit to gently clean render surfaces. If render is subjected to a high-pressure wash it can cause long term damage, we will return any render surface cleaned to its natural state, looking freshly painted, thus increasing the buildings kerb appeal and value.

We restore these surfaces, cleaning render, to as new conditions safely from the ground in most cases. In fact, we can restore any rendered surface including painted render and all pebble & spa dashed finishes.

It is also very likely that your render will look worse on the north and east sides of the building, where there is less natural sunshine. The warmer, more humid weather in the UK means that atmospheric growths are thriving, and are growing on render finished facades harder and faster than ever. Trying to remove these organic growths can prove problematic.

High-pressure washing can cause real damage, and if incorrectly removed the infection will return too soon.

With our treatments, we apply the correct products, with steam, to both clean the building and eliminate the infection. This ensures the building looks great after cleaning and keeps its brilliance. Almost looking as good as new.

Algae is one of the oldest organisms on the planet and usually the first organic growth to become visible on rendering walls. it is feeding of minerals and moisture in and on the substrate and once this happens specialist treatment will be required to remove it. Off the shelf biocides from garden centres will not be strong enough, and power washing, even if it seems to remove stains, will most likely damage your render permanently.

Whether you are looking for a K-Rend algae clean, or other render cleaning services, we are able to help. To discuss our render cleaning services please contact Moorcroft Plastering Southport today.

We were delighted to recently see that Southport is set to receive £37.5m in government funding for a range of exciting projects across the sea front and the town centre. Following a submission of a Town Investment Plan in October 2020, the money has been agreed nationally across 101 towns.

The Southport deal is one of the larger deals that the government has approved.

The Town Deal funding will help to diversify Southport’s economy and transform the town into a place millions of people will want to visit throughout the year, it is said that this deal will ultimately help create over 1,000 new jobs plus more than 300 construction jobs and as a result, Southport could hope to receive an extra 1 million visitors per year – something we can get on board with.

Development of a new theatre, events and conference centre which will be bustling all year round. There will also be infrastructure work which will support Southport Pleasureland’s ambitions to become an all-weather attraction that entertains visitors across all 12 months.

The added transformation of Southport Market into an exciting new food, drink and events venue will spark the regeneration of the Market Quarter, while new co-working and business incubator space will bring a further 300 workers into the town centre.

This success is a clear sign of confidence in the town, the quality of the projects put forward as part of the Town Investment Plan, the involvement of local people and businesses and the work of the Town Deal Board over the last year.

Following a hugely successful consultation and engagement process, the largest conversation ever had with those who live or work in the town, a Town Investment Plan was submitted reflecting many of the priorities that residents, business owners and visitors consider vital for the regeneration of the town.

Planned for Southport - The new conference and events centre

This funding will allow Southport to positively tackle the economic challenges faced as we emerge from the devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the announcement, Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council, said:

“After an incredibly hard year for the town’s businesses and residents, the announcement of this funding is a really positive way to start 2021. The Council, working with Town Deal Board and its partners, are ready to get started on many of the key projects as soon as we can.

“We will continue to seek further public and private investment to the Town to ensure the Town Deal is the catalyst to unlock many new opportunities.

Director of Moorcroft Plastering – Mark Moorcroft

“We are absolutely delighted that Southport will be benefitting from this deal. Its been a difficult 12-18 months for all and hopefully this will be the shot in the arm to get things moving again. It's a deal for all, not just the plastering or rendering industry in the area but electricians, builders, landscapers throughout Southport and Merseyside – We are excited as to what this can bring to the region and we can’t wait for it to get started”
